Motivation a process energizes, guides, maintain behaviors towards a goal. Needs: deficiency of some kind that creates arousal that motivates us to increase whatever we lack. Intrinsic motivations: mastery, autonomy, purpose, achievement, internally derives pleasure, Extrinsic motivations: compensation, punishment, reward, praise, prerequisite, avoid punishment. If a person expects to receive extrinsic reward, intrinsic motivation decreases. If the extrinsic reward is a surprise, intrinsic motivation persists. Tangible rewards tend to have more negative effects on motivation than intangibles. Overjustification effect: intrinsic motivation is diminished when extrinsic motivation is given. Reinforcement such as verbal praise increase intrinsic motivation. Homeostasis ( ): tendency for bodily functions to maintain equilibrium (a state of physical balance) p342. Self-efficacy(344): individual belief in her own capability to complete a task, which may include a previous successful completion of the exact task or a similar one.
