Angry faces pop out faster than happy faces (fox et al. Darwin speculated that facial expressions preceded spoken language. Experts are 54% accurate, 50% is pure chance. Present in infancy, except contempt, shame, and guilt. Infants are born with the emotions happy/joy, sad, angry, fear/anxiety, interest, surprise, disgust. Levels of emotions: mood, trait, disorder, depression, anxiety, phobias, mania. Discrete emotions are biologically driven, not just socially learned. Some fears are easier to learn than others. What makes us angry: friends and loved ones who commit wrongdoings, willful, unjustifiable c. avoidable, foul odors, high temperatures, traffic jams, aches and pains. When we feel happy, we are more willing to help others. Peaks at around 7 hours after waking up. Initially affects your happiness, but eventually you will come back to your baseline. Adaptation-level phenomenon: like the adaptation to brightness, volume, and touch, people adapt to income levels. Relative deprivation: perception that we are worse off than those we compare ourselves with.
