Motivation: process that influences the direction, persistence, and vigour of goal directed behaviour. Instinct theory based on darwin"s theory of evolution instincts motivate behaviour; inherited pre programmed way to behave specifically when exposed to a stimulus adaptive significance of behaviour key to understanding motivation: drive (reduction) theory. Incentive theories external stimuli with high incentive value motivates behaviour not correlated with biological needs. Expenctancy x value: expectation that behaviours will lead to goal, and value that the indiv. places on goal: psychoanalytic theories. Behaviour results in unconscious impulses struggle for release vs psychological defenses. e. g. , the urge to act crazy vs keeping your cool: humanistic theories. Self determination theory: competence - need to master new skills, autonomy - freedom of choice, relatedness - desire to form meaningful bonds with others. Motives to achieve: motive for success - outperforming others, motive to avoid failure - indicated by anxiety. Goals that result in being judged, doing for others to see.
