Document Summary

Lecture 2: naturalistic and structured observations, naturalistic observation is without manipulation, it is observation of the subject in their natural environment, structured observation is a more lab/controlled setting, extended observation without manipulation. Typically, lab based and they measure your behavior in some way. Allows the researcher to manipulate the situation. The name says it all, you self-report your own data. However, an issue is that sometimes people can lie or not have enough insight on themselves to report. Age effects, cohort effects, and time-of-measurement effects make it difficult to be able to compare data. Two main designs to follow with the two types of study: Longitudinal: follows the same group of participants over a long period of time. Cross-sectional: measures groups of people of different ages. Proximal factors: factors at time of testing that at associated with performance difference. Distal factors: factors earlier in life that can contribute to the differences at time of testing.
