PSYC 208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Homeostasis, Funeral Director
Document Summary
Death euphemisms function as a way to soften (make it more pleasant or funny) the conversation of death. Follow the person"s lead, express forgiveness, say goodbye, be kind, continue normal moments. Express you"re there for them, ask if they wish to talk, help where you can. Family is involved in the dying process depending on the relationship. The void hypothesis: when a family member dies, a void is created in the family structure that requires a new homeostasis. Factors in family adjustment - overprotective behaviour, lack of involvement, privacy issues, avoiding talking about it, replacement of person, restructuring family. In family of victims of suicide/accidental deaths, intense grief was associated with detachment from family. Conflict and disagreements among family can complicate the grieving process. Transgenerational grief: passing on emotional pain of loss to next generations. Children are usually excluded from death discussions - may lead to avoidant approaches as the child deals with death.
