PSYC 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Synesthesia, Temporal Lobe, Social Change
Document Summary
Couldn"t identify anyone but his uncle who had a very distinct mustache. Didn"t recognize photo of person who was sitting in front of him. His 5 year old brother was able to recognize all these photos. Our brain expects faces to be organized in a particular way: expects faces to stick out so perceives faces/masks this way (convex/concave mask, doesn"t treat objects that are the same shape this way. Recognizes right side up faces better than upside down faces: this is not really the case for objects. We have face areas in the brain (areas that respond more to faces more than to objects: fusiform face area, occipital face area, superior temporal sulcus. Some people are not able to recognize faces: they are able to recognize and distinguish between objects though. Prosopagnosia: face blindness: inability to recognize someone by their face, can tell you gender, smiling/frowning, age .
