Document Summary

Monday october 21st 2013 cognitive development 1. Violation of expectation : if infants have expectations of how things should happen, should look longer at impossible or unlikely events. Remember piaget: object permanence: objects continue to exist when not visible, infants start passing a-not-b task around 8-9 months, suggesting they have mental representation of objects. But, piaget used difficult tasks: require manual search. Using easier tasks, might infants show earlier understanding of objects: looking time. Idea that infants have a tacit knowledge about basic mechanical properties and principles that govern physical objects from birth: continuity, occlusion, movement, support, containment, collision. Continuity and occlusion objects move from one location to another in a continuous path, unless occluded by another object: even 3. 5mos seemed to be surprised when continuity is lost without occlusion. 3mos: show surprise when unsupported object doesn"t fall, but accept both below and side support.
