Psyc 305a lecture notes 27th jan 2015. 3 levels of analysis: population level, group differences level. Generational changes, e. g. baby boomers vs young generation. Everybody might change but the order of stability is still the same, i. e. rank order consistency. Everybody is affected by the tide in the same way, i. e. mean order consistency. Stability tends to increase with age but it never quite gets perfect to 1. Disadvantages: participants drop out, researcher gets old. Measures many people at the same time point with different ages. Personality measures: ambition is highest for 20-year-old men but then decreases, agreeableness increases steepest between 40- and 55-year-olds, conscientiousness has steepest increase between 30 and 40+ years old due to child-rearing and work/school, emotional stability. Greatest increase between 20 and 40 years old. Marriage may help reduce anxiety due to sharing of emotional burden with partner: openness to experience. Steepest increase from 10 to 20 years old during a period of growing up.
