Document Summary

Lecture 16 attitudes and attitude change: nature of attitude. How we evaluate a person, object, or idea. a) b) Affective = emotional reaction toward the target . Behavioral = actions or observable behavior toward target . Often based on values and beliefs, not rational examination. Not governed by logic (persuasive arguments about the issues seldom change an affectively base attitude) Challenging attitudes = challenging values and beliefs (the are often linked to people"s values, so that trying to change them challenges those values. ) People seem to vote more with their hearts than their minds. Ex: sometimes we simply like a certain brand of car, regardless of whether it gets good gas consumption or whether it has enough cup holders. Occasionally we even feel very positive about something such as another person-in spite of having negative beliefs. An example is falling in love with someone despite knowing that the person has a history of being untrustworthy.
