When you complete this unit, you should be able to: understand a definition of health as more than an absence of illness. Health, commonly defined as: the absence of 1) objective signs that the body is not functioning properly, or 2) subjective symptoms of disease or injury. But there is a problem with this definition. Health and sickness are not entirely separate concepts they overlap. Who defines health as: a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being not simply the absence of disease or infirmity. Our definition of health: a positive state of physical, mental and social well-being not simply the absence of injury or disease that varies over time along a continuum. Continuum from death to optimal wellness see figure 1-1 page 2: understand historical changes in how the relationship between the mind and the body. During the 17,18 and 19th centuries people died from: dietary diseases and infectious diseases.
