psyc 314: Social Relationships and Health Types of social support:  emotional social support: positive affect, encouragement, reassurance that that person is cared for and is a valued person, expressing warmth and nuturance  tangible social support: concrete resources, ex. monitary., servives, goods, etc.  informational social support: providing information/examples about something  appraisal social support: help someone try to interpret how they think about an event, getting someone to think differently about an event  invisible/implicit social support: providing support but they arent aware that you helped them in some way Who Benefits from what type of support? When given instrumental support boys had lower BP and when given emotional support girls had lower BP. If you give a girl instrumental support it is the same as giving them no support. If you give a boy emotional support it is the same as giving them no support  this is thought because boys are more comfortable with problem solving and girls are more likely to co-ruminate who benefits from what type of support? • Taylor et al., Psychological Science, 2007 • Caucasian &Asian American undergraduates • Acute laboratory stressor • Explicit vs. implicit support vs. no support manipulated • Outcome: cortisol response taylor et al  done on caucasian and asian american undergraduates  underwent acute stressor (public speaking stress on controversial topic)  looked at explicit (addressed a specific target problem) and implicit (knowing that you have a social network but not actively going to get support) support  after they told them the task they had them engage in a condition (write about how you would get support from a friend in regards to this public speaking task, talk generally about their support network, or write about landmarks around campus [explicit, implicit, or no support condition]) for 5 minutes  they measured peoples cortisol responses  results: caucasians had highest levels of cortisol when there
