Background: achievement goals (differ in classroom, people, etc) Performance goals: focus on favorable outcomes and avoid negative outcomes; demonstrating high ability compared to others: goal is on performance. Mastery/growth goals: develop one"s own abilities; learning for the sake of learning and getting better: to develop own abilities. Research has shown that when students who focus on mastery/growth goals seem to do better: work longer on hard tasks, show more effort, have better feelings about themselves.
