Arouse functional specific affective response that serves as signal that the underlying need is not fulfilled. Fitness benefits associated with being a member of a group. Likely to evolve motivational system associated with affiliation. My need of affiliation is met -- good person. My need for affiliation is not -- bad person. Predict immediate and temporary about whether they are socially included or socially excluded. Not accepted -- sense of worth decreases. Assign some to be included and some to be excluded. How good of a person you feel you are right now. Social exclusion that arouses in me -- need to re-establish affiliation. Positive impression on strangers who might be your new affiliation. To new people but not those who actually rejected them. To those who offer potential opportunity for interaction.
