Religions of the World Religious Theory • What is the Point of Theory? o Understanding the Data  Data is only as good as the theory that explains it o Common sense  Use common sense to argue conflicting theories • How religion came about, persists, believe • Linking Disparate Sciences o Answer two connected questions when thinking about religion o How does one live a good/virtuous life? o How does one contribute to a good/virtuous society? • Plato: said that nothing is real, what is real is what is behind everything o Behind the stuff are forms and everything corresponds to the forms o 1. People are not that smart  o 2.People don’t want to know the truth  What do you do? Create religion  God had made it that some people are smarter than others  Depends on what you are made of, you have a certain role in  society o Tier a virtuous society • Aristotle: different vision, people are not that stupid, not that there are forms but  that everything has an essence, in everyone and everything o Gives us secondary characteristics that defines who we are o Ex. Rockiness inside of rock – different qualities inside of everything o What is means to be a good person is that you are good in your own way  Good in your own religion, be moderate  o Love Aristotle because replace essence with God o Explains all aspects of reality o If the sun is the centre of the universe, we might not be as important as we  think we are  • The Enlightenment o Deconstructing Greek Conceptions of Science o European Wars of Religion  Defend the theories that you have built their lives upon o Reconstructing Norms of Society  Where does Religion fit in?  What explains Religiosity? • Theory of Society – The Social Contract o Locke  Human beings want to protect/pursue certain things  Regardless of religion want: life, lib
