Description
History of the Christian Church November 23, 2012 • Plague:  th o The Black Death, spread through Europe in 14  century, 20­25 million  people dead.  Blamed the Jewish populations – killing spree ensued.   “God’s punishment.” Places built for particular saints to ward off the  plague.   o Transform Europe; changes the economic system o Brought about purgatory  • Hussites:  o Followed the teachings of Jan Hus, who was a leader in the Protestant  Reformation.   Started the Hussite Wars after he was executed for heresy o Early 15  century – 100 years before Luther • Lollards: o Two of the groups named as nominalists  o Challenge the church authority   Dominate the universities in 15  century  Protestant reformers gained their education from that viewpoint o Not as organized of a movement   Trend rather than a movement, way of thinking that was common  Not distinct Lollard Church o Centered in Northern Europe (not heartland of Catholicism) England,  Holland  • Indulgences: o Developing idea of purgatory, pay money and you get reduction of time of  purgatory for you or someone else • Avignon Papacy: o Period of 70 years 1309­1376 o Papacy moved to Avignon in France so it was no longer in the Vatican o Conflict between Popes • Reconquista: o 800 years in Spain; conflict Christianity and Islam in Spain
