What is deviant in one society may be normal in another. People become deviant as others define them that way (symbolic interactionalism) Deviance is all about the power to define an act as deviant or not. Deviance created through social control (reactions to behaviors) not a characteristic of behaviors. Crime special case of deviance: social norms formalized in criminal law. Understand political processes and power relations that create definitions of deviance. Determine who these definitions are assigned to. Determine consequences for those defined as deviant. Durkheim: deviance is necessary and good; affirms cultural values and norms; clarifies moral boundaries; promotes unity brings people together; encourages social change. Ex. cant do insider trading unless others are willing to do it; help learn the roles. Labeling theory: deviance and conformity result from how others respond to actions (not what people do)
