Process of social change begun by industrialization. Rise of individualism - relating on basis of self-interest. Has become affluent, social health of modern societies in decline (eg: dubai) Traditional societies: perform much the same activities. Mechanical solidarity: society held together by common moral sentiments. Community based on ties of kinship and neighborhood. Organic solidarity: social bonding by way of specialized work. All must depend on others to meet needs. Traditional worldview replaced with rational way of thinking: pre-industrial: tradition acts to slow social change, modern people value efficiency, little reverence for past, adopt whatever social patterns let them gain goals. Rational world view: forward-looking, detached: evident in science, capitalism & growing bureaucracies, fear science leading away from essential questions. About meaning & purpose of human existence (i. e. why are we here?) Resulting social conflict: sow seeds of egalitarian socialist revolution.
