Acculturation: transmission of culture from one generation to the next. Education was synonymous with acculturation: then later one education came to be something distinct form informal acculturation, is a groups formal system of teaching knowledge, values, and skills. Formal education remained limited to those who had the leisure to pursue it. Industrialization transformed this approach to learning as new machinery and new types of jobs brought a general need to be able to read, write and work accurately with figure. School attendance gradually started to increase as the value of education was recognized across communities. Commitment to education was regarded not only as a personal benefit but a civic responsibility.
