Document Summary
Many different factors involved in discerning one"s social rank or social class: gender. In many societies, men are ranked higher" than women(changing: age, family connections(background) Ethnicity is part of a social system that promotes stratification. Peter worsley(1984: the three worlds: culture and development. Not merely about ethnicity and class, but there"s a section on it: 3 way in which ethnicity and class interact: Cutting across: multiple stats or ranks are available for each group, but particular groups dominate one class. Example: canada, where most people in upper class are white(european), but there are other ethnicities that are in that class: middle class: various ethnic groups. Segmented: each level or rank is divided into numerous occupational niches each with their own ethnic group. Example: colonial mauritius, each ethic group occupies a specific occupation, and occupation fits within a class structure. Objective vs subjective: difference does exist and can be objectively identified.
