A phenomenon regarded as bad or undesirable by a significant number of people or a number of significant people who mobilize to eliminate it. Group mobilizes to eliminate social problem: to understand why a group forms, we must understand the social structure. Social structure = total of individuals, groups & institutions in society and the relationships between them: sociologists assume rules govern these relationships. Job of sociology is to study and describe these rules. A phenomenon does not become a social problem because of its inherent badness. Instead: due to factors external to problem rooted in social structure & social movement organization. Social constructionism: concerned with how meanings of social problems are constructed. Identify phenomenon as problematic: provide explanations for causes, persuade public that phenomenon is problematic must be dealt with, social constructionism examines these processes.
