Document Summary

Race- a group who share biological features that members of a society deem socially significant. Ascribed trait, you are born with the skin colour you are born with. Race and ethnicity do not need to go together. The importance of racial o ethnic features is conferred. Their importance is not inherent in the features themselves. 49% under 6 live below the poverty line. 57% off-reserve children under 12 live below the poverty line. 6x more likely to be taken into governmental care. Racism: the belief that one racial category is innately superior to another. Ethnocentrism: we see our (dominate group in the society) as predominately better. Authoritarian personalities that end up in higher level powerful positions, the worse. More educated the population, the less they will follow the authoritarian figure. Ex: family level, dads a racist so will the child be. Social distance: how close r distance do you feel in relation to members of various ethnic groups/people.
