An individual"s personal troubles and public issues in a society can be linked together through the sociological imagination : 2. Individuals can only understand their own experiences fully if the locate themselves within their period of history. Society as: structured options, social rules, social resources. People choose, but don"t choose the options that are available to them. Options vary depending on where and who you are (eg. like a menu at a restaurant) Examples: living in an ethnically homogenous neighbourhood creates/limits options (friends, attitudes toward other groups, knowledge of ethnicities/cultures, ubc (knowledge and skills, possible job connections, marriage partners) Society gives us rules to live by: rules" of public order, conversation, and dress. Rules constrain us, but they allow us to do things too (ie. rules of the road allow us to drive)
