Document Summary

Native people in canada are afforded few opportunities for meaningful employment or for stating business ventures that respect their diverse cultures. No living conditions on many reserves are healthy. Nor are there opportunities for young people to explore their place in the native way of life. The combination of adverse social, psychological, and economic conditions serves to heighten susceptibility to illness and poor health. Value contradiction: national or group superiority violates freedom, democracy and equality. There simply cannot be full expressions of freedom, democracy and equality alongside homophobia, racism and sexism. One way canadians sidestepped this contradiction in the past saying that the values of freedom, democracy and equality applied only to certain groups. Most canadians who live and work with many different subcultural groups continue to extend the values of freedom and equality. As a result we are reducing the emphasis on a single national group superiority.
