SOCI 217 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Multivariate Analysis, Characteristic Subgroup, Standard Deviation
Week 10- quantitative analysis
Standard deviation
• If the mean score of midterm 2 is 73 and the standard deviation is 7%. What grade
range would you expect?
o 68%
▪ 1 standard deviation
▪ 73 +/- 7
o 95%
▪ 2 standard deviation
▪ 73 +/- 14
o 99%
▪ 3 standard deviation
▪ 73 +/- 21
• smaller deviation is a better measure of a sample characteristic
subgroup comparisons
• often, it’s appropriate to describe subsets of cases, subjects or respondents
• combining different variables to explain
bivariate analysis
• 1. Cases are divided into groups according to attributes of independent variable
• 2. Subgroups then described by attributes of dependent variable
• 3. Compare independent variable subgroups with one another according to given
attribute of dependent variable
reading crosstabs for bivariate analysis
• contingency tables
• 1. Determine IV and DV for your analysis
o IV down on column and DV on row
• 2. Table should be percentage according to the IV
o percentage down the table
o must be added to 100
• 3. Read table by comparing IV subgroups with one another in terms of the same
category of the DV
o interpret across about every row
o then one statement to conclude
