We tend to think about suicide in terms of personal reasons. Durkheim highlights the social (not psychological) causes of suicide. Demonstraing the need to look at social facts. Suicide rates difer across diferent groups and imes. Too high or too low levels of integraion raises rates of suicide. Modern industrial socieies related to an increase in suicide lack of regulaion and integraion. Some religious groups have higher suicide rates than others. Highest in protestanism where individualism is encouraged allows more independent thought in religious teachings. Weakened social bonds + increased individualism = higher rates of suicide. More educated people than non educated people. Duty or for the good of society. More associated with tradiional society when the individual is almost non existent. In other words, if his needs require more than can be granted, or even merely something of a diferent sort, they will be under coninual fricion and can only funcion painfully.
