SOCI 371 Lecture 1: Soci 371 Self
Document Summary
Self is taken for granted: your awareness and perception of your existence, you body real, your beliefs/what you like to do/ interests, the roles that you play. Self, then, is learned in symbolic interaction : symbolic: things signify meanings beyond the things themselves. Symbols- communicating stuff with other people: non- significant things become symbolic/significant in symbolic internationalism, symbols are contextual signs of disrespect, perception is central. The essence: people act toward objects based on the meaning those objects hold to them, meanings arise in social interaction, meanings become used in social interaction. Objects become meaningful in relation to plans: physical- pens, computers, text messages, powerpoint, social- us, you, talking about other people when they"re not around. We act towards things according to their meanings for our plan. For social plans, these meanings must be consensual: shared meaning about reality and the meaning behind object. Is reality really what we think it is.
