Statistical quality control: use of statistical techniques and sampling in monitoring and testing of quality of goods and services. Inspection: appraisal of a good or service against a standard: vital aspect of quality control. Statistical process control planning process: define quality characteristics important to customers & how measured. Characteristics that can be measured are control candidates. E. g. paint characteristics colour, gloss, thickness: for each characteristic, determine a quality control point. At the end of the process image, satisfaction at stake. High costs for passing defective products more inspection. Cost of inspection/process interruptions no 100% inspection. Cost of letting undetected defects slip through can"t be 0% Specialized tests in a lab analyzing food samples, etc. Are specialized lab tests worth time/interruption needed to obtain results: plan corrective action. Process judged out of control stop process, uncover cause, take corrective action. After taking corrective action, monitor process output to verify problem has been eliminated.
