Disagreement arising from differences in values, attitudes, or needs in which the
behaviour of one part frustrates the ability of the other to reach their expected
goals
Majority of conflict comes from miscommunication or lack of communication
Types of conflict
Intrapersonal conflict
A conflict that’s going on within someone, can initiate interpersonal conflict
Interpersonal conflict:
Between two or more people, i.e. nurse and client.
Examples:
oClient feels nurse isn’t paying attention
oThere’s pressure on nurse to give more information than comfortable
giving
oPressure to give more time than available
Unresolved conflict
Can lead to: tension, resentment, shutting down, pulling away from
Personal conflict vs Professional conflict
Leave professional at work and go home at the end of the day but with personal
carrying it with you all day
Can be easier to deal with personal since you know the person well and are
comfortable with them
Nurse to client conflict more common
Illness takes away a persons power, conflict is a way for a patient to regain some
power
Main source is intrapersonal
Need to learn what triggers are
oExample: people talking down, yelling at me, arrogance
