Non-benzodiazepine sedatives (designed specifically for sleep disorders. Both have common problem of tolerance buildup- benzodiazepine more so. Insomnia hyper-arousal: heart rate, temperature, eeg, and metabolic activation (not being able to calm down- racing mind) Narcolepsy: uncontrollable falling asleep- go almost directly into rem sleep. Sleep apnea: reflexing gasping for air that awakens the sleep (having trouble breathing- can damage heart and lungs, often prescribed apparatus to keep airway open) Nightmares: anxiety arousing dreams- during rem sleep, most common in children. Night terrors: intense arousal and panic non-rem sleep, no memory of the dream, more common in children. Somnambulism: sleep walking- usually the person does not remember this, generally during slow wave sleep and first few hours of sleep- certain parts of brain are asleep on eeg, certain parts are awake . Rem sleep behaviour disorder (rbd): no sleep paralysis due to some type of deterioration in the brain stem.
