SOCI2323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Equal Pay For Equal Work

Inequalities and differences: a look at pay equity
The gender wage gap is influenced by:
-family responsibilities (affecting job choice, hours worked, career growth decisions)
-job clustering (segregation)
-under-valuation of traditionally female jobs
Pay equity- equal pay for work of equal value (comparable worth)
Question: how is (or should) the pay of a job be determined?
Pay equity: how it works (using job evaluation… on basis of four factors)
1. Skills and qualifications
2. Responsibilities
3. Effort required
4. Working conditions
The Wage Gap Action Plan was established by the Conservative government in 2005 and is
based on voluntary measures to achieve pay equity. Despite this, the wage gap widened.
In April 2010, the Pay Equity Act 2009 came into force in NB for the public sector, applicable to
government jobs and Crown corporations.
Last liberal government promised “to establish government as a model employer by starting job
evaluations to extend pay equity to workers providing contracted services to government”. Pay
equity processes commenced in 2010 for workers in the following sectors:
-child care
-home support
-transition house
-community residence
-nursing home
“The goal of pay equity legislation is to eliminate wage gaps between female-dominated and
male-dominated occupational categories when the work performed is of comparable value. The
Government of New Brunswick should be congratulated for agreeing to conduct pay equity
exercises in the child care and home care sectors, transition houses and community residences.
However, the exercises must be completed in good faith, using wages and job descriptions
which reflect the reality of the New Brunswick labour market.”
