Unit 7
Jane Elliot
Was a 3rd grade school teacher who did a small study with her class right after the assassination
of Martin Luther King. She taught the children about discrimination by labelling a specific eye
colour as inferior and another as superior
Social Identity Theory
Is based on the idea that a portion of a person’s self-concept is derived from perceived
membership in a relevant social group
Formulated by Henry Tajfel and John Turner
Groupthink
Is when members of a cohesive group agree on a decision not because of its merit, but because
they are afraid of deviating. A common example is Solomon Asch’s Conformity Experiment; 37%
conformed with nobody else giving the right answer, and only 5% with a partner
Deindividuation
is the loss of self-awareness and individual accountability in a group. Seeks to explain things like
mob mentality.
Tribal Hostility
Or hostility between “neighbours”
is so common that it at times seems to be a part of the human condition. However, it often
happens after living in peace for years, and it very rarely just happens or breaks out.
Rwandan Genocide
committed against the Tutsis by the Hutus
in precolonial times, Tutsis were the ruling tribe, and this dominant status was maintained
under the colonial rule of Germans and Belgians
although the differences were acknowledged for a while, it was during colonialization that the
division became rigid with identity cards
Hutus revolted in 1959; there has been tension since
Genocide was planned and carried out by those in power

- Many of the wars during the latter half of the 20th C, including the conflicts that aren’t always
acknowledged throughout southern Asia, South America, and Africa, are a result of
decolonialization and globalization. Although the UN has managed to maintain peace among
more of the industrialized nations, it is often shit on for this.
-Genos is Greek for “people” and Latin cide is for “killing” = genocide. Coined by Raphael Lemkin
in 1944 to describe “the attempt to destroy a nation or ethnic group by killing or preventing
procreation
See Article 2 of the United Nations/Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of
Genocide
- Christopher Columbus is one of the unacknowledged figures of genocide; responsible for an
estimated 8 million deaths. Hitler used the American genocide as a method to sway his followers
in the direction of the “final solution,” by emphasizing its insignificance in the global ethical
community.
-Shoah the Jewish term for Holocaust. Along with the estimated 6 million Jews killed in the
Holocaust, there was an estimated 2.5 million Soviet prisoners, 2 million Poles.
- Kristallnacht was a pogrom: a form of riot directed against a particular group, whether ethnic,
religious, or other, and characterized by killings and destruction of their homes, property,
businesses and religious centres. The term was original used to denote extensive violence
against Jews.
- Aspects of genocide include: oppression, dehumanization, displacement, and systematic
extermination.
