First essay assignment Due February 7th , assignment is “two parts”
Use an example like an event that happened, ie the Holocaust.
Use the contradiction that all of the tragedies and grosses abuses of inhuman acts were to lead to
human security.
How can you turn society? The so-called moral resources, respect and sympathy for others, they get
reversed. Social psychology: human behaviour is shaped by the situations you find yourself in, and
culture. Philip Zimbardo: the psychology of evil TedTalk video. (Go through the sections where he talks
about the moral resources- breakdown the moral resources to make someone not follow a moral way).
“God is dead, and we have killed him”
“Ethics Humanized” (the course conclusion)
We’re trying to preserve humanity
Thesis statement: “how do you suck the humane out of someone?”
Moral resources, deindividuation, resocialization
The term Human Security was first popularized by the UN Development Program in the early 1990s.
- The concept emerge from a post-Cold War, multi-disciplinary understanding of security
involving a number of research fields, including development studies, international relations,
strategic studies and human rights.
-Thomas Hobbes: absolute national security, his famous philosophical book, ‘The Leviathan’
- We should focus on also Human Security, rather than just national security. What is peace? (the
presence of justice, not the absence of conflict –MLK) add justice, not try to take away conflict
- National security = the state, human security = the individual /// starting with human security is
that it is a buildup of security, from the ground up.
- “…the pillars of what we now understand as the people-centered concept of ‘human security’
are interrelated and mutually reinforcing.”
- Begin the topic of security with an individual.
Philip Zimbardo “So What are the seven social processes that grease the slippery slope of evil?”
