Week 7: Christianity
Original Sin
-Not found directly in the New Testament nor taken from Judaism
-Original sin is hereditary through Adam; introduces death into the world
-The sexual act simply reproduces the sin in the next generation
-We should have been sinless; We are born broken; Baptism removes original sin
Original Sin
-Only the fallen need grace; We cannot save ourselves, through our own effort
-Not about “guilt” but reclaiming holiness as we are conditioned to be sinful
-For Paul, this comes only through accepting Jesus as Lord and savior—justification
-Sin is about how our <3 & minds are geared to satisfy our wants & desires rather than serve God
-Feel helpless: why do we do wrong when we know it’s wrong? We need God’s grace & baptism
Atonement
-This is the notion that Christ’s death atoned for human sins, and that his death was redemptive
(Paul: “Christ our passover is sacrificed for us”)
-It is a pointing to the way to salvation
-Through his sacrifice, humans can have a relationship with God
-There are many ideas about atonement in classical Christian thought: (a) Jesus’ death
ransoms/frees humanity from spiritual captivity; (b) it is evidence of God’s love; and (c) only a
divine death could substitute for human sinfulness
Salvation
-For most of Christian history, most Christians have believed that salvation comes exclusively to
those who belief in the redemptive life and death of Jesus Christ—though this position has many
nuances
-A believer is “saved” from their sin—because human nature in general is sinful—by their belief
-Christians disagree about the degree to which individuals can contribute towards salvation—this
is the faith and works issue
Eschatology
-This is all the speculative big stuff: what is the afterlife? What about the Second Coming?
Resurrection of the dead?
-Amongst Protestants, reference to the Rapture is common (the idea that, with the Second
Coming of Christ, faithful Christians will meet him “in the air,” with many unfaithful left behind)
-This is a historically new view, however
-For most Christian history, the belief has been that Christ will judge everyone at the end of times
Second Coming
-Most simply, this term refers to the return of Christ to earth to judge humanity, separate the
righteous and the wicked, defeat the devil, and bring together the kingdom of God and kingdom
