PSYC 3600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Parasympathetic Nervous System, Nervous System Disease, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
The nervous system is activated in times of stress and threat. The nervous system works by exchanging impulses between peripheral. It"s job is to keep the body in equilibrium and return it to normal functioning nerves, internal organs and the brain for voluntary and involuntary movement. The nervous system works with the endocrine system. 1 in 3 have nervous system disorder. Examples include alzheimer"s, ms, epilepsy, huntingtons, parkinson"s, The sympathetic nervous system prepares body for emergencies like fight or flight. The parasympathetic nervous system returns body to normal functioning. Feeling sleepy or relaxed after eating a large meal is an example of the parasympathetic nervous system working. The medulla, pons and cerebellum make up the hindbrain. The medulla controls automatic functions like heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. The pons link the hindbrain and midbrain. The cerebellum controls voluntary movement like controlling muscles. The midbrain controls visual and auditory reflexes.
