PSYC 3600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Coronary Artery Disease, Aversion Therapy
Document Summary
Health-compromising behaviours are those that threaten or undermine good health, either in the present or in the future. Many of these behaviours cluster and first emerge in adolescence. Substance use disorder occurs when an individual"s recurrent use of a substance causes clinically and/ or functionally significant impairment and/or psychological distress. Harm reduction is an approach to dealing with substance abuse that aims to reduce but not necessarily eliminate substance abuse to help minimize the associated health and social harms. Psychoactive substances such as illicit drugs result in cognitive and affective changes when ingested. They can alter behaviour in ways that can result in a variety of physical, mental, and social problems. Understand how alcohol use disorder and problem drinking compromise health. Alcohol use disorder accounts for thousands of deaths each year through cirrhosis, cancer, fetal alcohol syndrome, and accidents connected with drunk driving.
