Document Summary

Textbook reference: chapter 28 in biology how life works (2nd ed. ) Most organisms represented in the 119 branches of the seven superkingdoms are unicellular. 83 out of the 119 are single-celled organisms. Only 36 branches show some level of multicellularity such as: filaments, hollow balls, sheets of little differentiated cells. Properties of simple multicellular organisms include: adhesion molecules. 2: most of the cells retain a full range of functions including reproduction. 3. every cell is in contact with the external environment. Two algal groups, three protozoan groups and one fungal group show coenocytic organization multiple nuclear division without cytokinesis. Very large cells with multiple nuclei result. E. g. green alga and predatory protest expt: ability to maintain position on a surface or in water better than single-celled relatives, co-ordination of movements for different functions, e. g. coordinated movement of cilia for more efficient feeding.
