Document Summary

Slide 4: objective inherent or common characteristic that makes something deviant. Slide 5: define deviance objectively by: statistical rarity, harm, societal reaction (if something has a negative response) and normative violation (if a characteristic violates a social norm) Slide 6: subjective no specific trait/characteristic that makes something deviant. It is an individual socialization that teaches us what is deviant. Slide 7: deviance as a social construction nothing about act/behaviour is deviant, deviant only if dominant moral code says so. Deviant in one society may be considered normal in another society or at another time in history. Question: the notion that there is a common characteristic inherent in a person, behaviour or attitude is consistent with subjective definitions of deviance. Slide 9: rather than seeing things as only objectively deviant or only subjectively deviant, another way is viewing objectively and subjectively falling on a continuum. Slide 10: social typing process (3 parts) description, evaluation and prescription.
