Document Summary
Endocrine system works together with the nervous (neuroendocrine system) Both are messaging systems, sending signals around the body. In the endocrine system, secreting cells send hormone molecules by way of blood to specific target cells contained in target tissues or target organs. Similarities: release chemicals in order to communicate with another cell. Glands of the endocrine system are widely scattered throughout the body. Endocrine glands are ductless glands ; a few endocrine glands are made of neurosecretory tissue. Tropic hormones hormones that target other endocrine glands and stimulate their growth and secretion of other hormone ex. Anabolic hormones hormones that stimulate anabolism in target cells. Lipid soluble can cross lipid bilayer and the nuclear membrane. Lipid soluble and can easily pass through phospholipid plasma membrane of target cells. Hydrophilic cannot pass through the lipid membrane. Hormones signal a cell by binding to the target cells specific receptors in a lock-and- key mechanism.
