Listening is a complex process of selecting, attending to, constructing meaning from, remembering, and responding to verbal and nonverbal messages. Selecting choosing the sound on which to focus. Analytical focus on fact, withhold judgment before reaching conclusion. Critical evaluate information, noting contradictions in facts and questioning assumptions underlying a message (second guessing) Task-oriented focus on specific transaction, focus on verbs (action-oriented) not rambling, descriptive messages. Listener apprehension the fear of misunderstanding, misinterpreting, or being unable to. Information overload adjust (psychologically) to the spoken messages of others. Self-absorption consciously become aware of your internal focus and shift attention. Unchecked emotions use self-talk to manage emotions. Criticizing the speaker focus on the message, not the messenger. Different speech rate and thought rate use the difference to mentally summarize the message.
