Document Summary

Triggers macrophages to stimulate an immune response and creates inflammation. Can then develop fibrosis there is less diffusion of gases across the membrane. Cancer starts in the pleural area that covers the lungs. Pleura is the only location that has pain receptors in the respiratory system. Edema is caused by water entering the interstitial spaces. Both membranes are thin so there is easy diffusion from the alveoli to the capillary. When there is water entering the interstitial space, it creates a barrier in the capillary so oxygen and carbon dioxide are restricted from leaving the membrane. If an infant is prematurely born, they might not have develop type 2 alveolar cells to produce surfactant * Alveoli can collapse (atelectasis) and it is difficult for them to open since they are not mature and not yet functional * Prevention prevent labour and delivery as much as possible.
