1. Identify and examine the P waves –normal – present and upright if upside down could
mean that the person has an arrhythmia – no noticeable P wave = atrial fibrillation
2. Measure the PR interval – distance between the beginning of the P wave to the
beginning of the QRS complex. PRI – 0.12 - 0.20 secs
3. Measure the QRS complex – 0.06 – 0.12
4. Identifying the rhythm – regular or irregular – measure distance between Rs
5. Determine the heart rate – 6 second method – count number of Rs and multiply by 10 –
works best for irregular rhythm
a. Big box method – 300 divided by the number of big boxes between 2 R’s - works
better for regular heart rhythms (and if you don’t have the 6 second method
lines)
6. Interpret strip
