HLSC 4412U Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Atrial Fibrillation, Qrs Complex, Pr Interval
1. Identify and examine the P waves βnormal β present and upright if upside down could
mean that the person has an arrhythmia β no noticeable P wave = atrial fibrillation
2. Measure the PR interval β distance between the beginning of the P wave to the
beginning of the QRS complex. PRI β 0.12 - 0.20 secs
3. Measure the QRS complex β 0.06 β 0.12
4. Identifying the rhythm β regular or irregular β measure distance between Rs
5. Determine the heart rate β 6 second method β count number of Rs and multiply by 10 β
works best for irregular rhythm
a. Big box method β 300 divided by the number of big boxes between 2 Rβs - works
better for regular heart rhythms (and if you donβt have the 6 second method
lines)
6. Interpret strip
