NURS 2820U Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Thrombin, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Primary Cell
Document Summary
Hematologic disorders: white blood cell alteraions & coagulaion alteraions. Can occur as normal protecive mechanism in response to stressors or infecion (granulocytosis/neutrophilia- bacterial ), (eosinophilia- allergies or parasiic infecion) or (lymphocytosis- viral infecions ) Can also be caused by pathological condiions such as malignancies or myeoloproliferaive disorders (polycythemia vera, leukemias) Never normal and maybe caused by radiaion, chemotherapy, immune deiciencies (aids), autoimmune disease (sle) (granulocytopenia- most common, neutropenia, lymphocytopenia (reducion inf lymphocytes) Increases the risk of infecions which can become life- threatening. Leucocytosis- higher than normal: polycythemia: many cells in the blood -> increase in wbc, rbc and platelets in the blood o can be normally increase in response to inlammaion or stressores/infecion or pathological condiion such as myloproliferated bone ex. Leucopenia decrease in wbc count than normal: reducion in neutrophil numbers: neutropenia, thrombocytopenia: reducion in number of platelets. Phagocyic cells (granulocytes, monocytes, macrophages) may lose their phagocyic capacity to funcion. Lymphocytes may lose their capacity to respond to anigens.
