Deficits in functioning: appearance reality: the ability to keep the true properties or characteristics of an object in mind despite the deceptive appearance the object has assumed, children in preoperational stage lack this ability, maynard the cat. Hardware machine itself; brain, neural connections, etc. Software programs used to story & manipulate info; strategies: as hardware matures, and new strategies are adopted, children are able to perform increasingly complex cognitive tasks with greater speed and accuracy.
