PSYC 2050U Lecture 2: Week 2 Notes
Document Summary
Dura mater first layer, sack that surrounds the brain. Arachnoid spider web layer, tiny hairs that allow the cns to travel. Infection pushes on the brain and takes up space which can cause permanent brain damage. Helps remove waste product from the brain. Water on the brain block in the ventricles leads to buildup of csf. Increased pressure on the brain, very young: skull swells (brain damage) The brain is physically well protected, but less so for outside agents (infections) Carries information about the world to the brain. Carries information from the brain to the body. The spinal cord is actually an extension of the brain. Produces some behaviours on its own, without any help from the brain. Spinal reflexes are automatic, requiring no conscious effort. The neural circuits underlying many spinal reflexes are linked to neural pathways that run up and down the spinal cord, to and from the brain. reflexes can sometimes be influenced by thoughts and emotions.
