Task: to synthesize and organize a body of literature. To do this, you must: have a good understand of the material. Identify the main ideas and arguments: determine which information in a text is significant, be able to paraphrase, remember: synthesis is not summarizing a text. Task: synthesizing or summarizing and critiquing literature. To do this, you must: same as synthesis/analytical summary, plus critique assess the strengths and weaknesses of individual texts or a body of scholarship, provide evidence to support your critique, read the texts multiple times. Task: make an argument; sometimes it also involves: analyzing an event; studying a problem; responding to a particular proposition. Essays rely on logic and critical reflection. Identify a topic or subtopic narrow down the topic: structure your essay to reinforce your argument, acknowledge alternative perspectives, use a particular structure introduction; body paragraphs (used to support the argument presented in the introduction); conclusion. Task: to write a bibliography with accompanying summaries.
