Jan 24th  S OCIALIZATION Spritz (1940) the baby / communication / dead experiment THE  C INGULATE  CORTEX ­ Integral to the Limbic System – generates maternal response, empathy, emotional expressiveness. And motivation to  communicate ­ When it is damaged, all of these things disappear ­ Humans are born interact from the moment they are born ­ They acquire the necessary cognitive and emotional skills to get along in society ­ Learn daily routines and to conform to particular behaviour through socialization ­ And we develop our sense of our identity, our concept of self ­ We learn to internalize behaviours, mannerisms, and norms 3 M AIN  T YPES  OF  S OCIALIZATION P RIMARY  S OCIALIZATION ­ Mostly in the family environment ­ Intention: what to eat, what to wear, what to play with, how to act, what is taboo, sadness, funny, acceptable and  inacceptable behaviours ­ Unintentional; power, authority, gender, patriarchy, racism… ­ The things you do in front of your child that they mimic even though it may not be the same as what you intentionally try  to teach them.
