Chapter 10: Communication
● Communication: process by which information and meaning is transferred from a sender
to a receiver
● communicating helpful information to a struggling teammate may be viewed as a form of
interpersonal citizenship behaviour
What does it mean to be a “good communicator”?
● Face to face communication
○ The exchange of information and meaning when one or more individuals are
physically present, and where communication occurs without the aid of any
mediating technology
○ Email and other forms of mediated communication are reducing the frequency
face to face communication in work settings
○ Two forms of communication that characterize face-to-face exchanges:
■ Verbal communication: a form of communication in which messages are
sent and received using written and spoken language
● Leaders coordinate activities through oral and written language
● Helps obtain, transfer and store information and knowledge within
the organization
● Written communication example - mission statement, corporate
goals and values (f2f communication can be written or oral)
■ Nonverbal communication: any form of information exchange that doesn’t
involve spoken or written words. Ex. body language
● Computer-mediated communication
○ The exchange of information and meaning using an electronic, digital medium
■ Omnipresent and unavoidable reality in virtually all organizations
○ Web 2.0: describes websites and applications through which users actively
interact, create, collaborate and communicate
○ Email: popular method of exchanging written digital messages from an author to
one or more recipients
■ Level of email used increased and other forms of communication

○ Videoconferencing: a communication medium that permits real-time, live
interaction and discussion between remote individual or groups via satellite or
internet
■ Cost-efficient and more task-oriented than typical face-to-face interactions
○ Wiki: a highly flexible web 2.0 application that allows people to quickly exchange
verbal information and collaboratively solve problems, learn, manage problems
and create knowledge
○ Social network applications: internal social networks can be leveraged to
increase individual and team performance by providing information that facilitates
how people perform their technical roles
■ Help align HR with strategic goals and support the psychological
environment in which technical activities occur by strengthening
emotional links between people and increase feelings of empowerment
■ Connections by ibm … achievers, linkedin
● The Communication Process: Potential Issues
○ Communicator competence: ability of communicators to encode and interpret
messages
■ How good are you at communicating? Can you say your points clearly
and convey it well?
○ Noise: disturbing or distracting stimuli that block or interfere with the
transmission of the message ex. Environmental events, technical issues
■ “ummm”
■ If 1 or 2 parties isnt willing to put extra effort to send and receive
messages when there is noise, convo wont last long
