Early 18th century explorers had limited means of seaward orientation. Expansions in exploration shaped the understanding of the world. When columbus landed in the caribbean, he thought it was asia. The locals called the land guanahani but he named it san salvador. The systematic mapping of the world is thought to have begun with the 11th century, expanding with the search of commercially exploitable goods, such as salt, gold and people. They considered the exchange value more than the use value, in contrast to the locals. Africa had the people and the arabs knew that. They explored and exploited and are the root cause of rightlessness. European colonialism was underwritten by law, indicating a racial hierarchy and european cultural superiority. The spirit of colonialism has outlived the era. Even as colonies declare independence of their colonisers, many elements of colonialism remain. Many believe that colonialism is ever present in canada. A colony is a particular type of socio-political organisation.
