Linguistic diversity within africa, making communication and organization difficult. Within slave populations in haiti there isn"t as much diversity as most came from the same area of africa. Majority of slaves were in the north of the island. Big number in atlantic world of a free black population, which was not typical. Some among the free had fought with french forces that had allied with americans during the american revolution. So some free blacks had been exposed to democracy, revolution, and freedom. Once revolution happens in france rich whites side with monarchy and poorer whites side with revolution. Free blacks want reform but around race and class, but less around question for freedom.
