Document Summary

How a long bone becomes longer by adding in cartilage and ossifying bone. As the long bone lengthens, the shape of the ends must be altered (remodeling) remember that the ends are wider than the shaft. Bone remodeling is the reshaping and changes in the shape of bone. Because as you make new cartilage to allow growth that cartilage gets converted to bone right away. Growth in width = appositional growth layers of bone are laid down on top of one another: 1) osteoblasts on periosteal side secrete bone matrix, 2) osteoclasts on the endosteal side remove bone matrix. Density of bone is modulated in osteoclasts and osteoblasts (refill the cavities) Osteoclasts create a microenvironment under the cell create an acidic environment which dissolves mineral content remove the matrix to complete process of resorption. Osteoclasts deposit osteons made primarily of collagen. Osteoblast, bone modeling promotes growth and strength.
